IISG provides funding to researchers in Illinois and Indiana who are working on issues of importance to the southern Lake Michigan region through three primary mechanisms, outlines below. Our outreach and education specialists use the research generated through these and other sources as the basis for our programs and work to develop relationships with researchers to ensure we convey the latest information.
Current and past research can be found on our research page. Press releases and news items about our research are also available.
Funding opportunities are announced on the IISG homepage and via our email list. If you would like to receive emails about future funding, please email iisg@illinois.edu with your contact information.
IISG Core Proposals (or Omnibus funds)
IISG requests proposals for research related to the use, development, and conservation of Lake Michigan coastal resources in Illinois and Indiana. These RFPs typically occur every two years. Researchers in Illinois and Indiana are eligible to apply for funding. Funding is approximately $40,000 per year for two years.
IISG Program Development Proposals
IISG has limited discretionary funds for the initial development of promising research and outreach projects. Funding for development projects is less than $10,000 for not more than one year. In order to be considered for funding, interested applicants should review the guidelines and contact our research coordinator.
National Strategic Investment Proposals
The National Sea Grant Office requests proposals for research and outreach in a variety of regional and national issues including aquatic invasive species, aquaculture, and marine resource issues. Researchers in Illinois and Indiana are eligible to apply for funding. Funding can be in excess of $100,000 per year for two years. When NSI proposals are requested, the RFP will be posted on the IISG home page and via our email list.
